VGLI...Why Not?
Written by Cassandra Dostourian on June 28th 2021
Why is it that if you want a straightforward explanation of why VGLI is a waste of time or what other options there are, you have to promise an hour of your time to a stranger?

Charlie was over it by the time we met. The tediousness of outprocessing had already exercised most of his patience and he just wanted answers.

Why isn’t VGLI a good option and if it isn’t, what in the world is?

The facts about VGLI are not a secret to be gatekept and can easily be broken down so here’s the breakdown I gave Charlie.

VGLI is coverage that the VA offers as a replacement for SGLI (ServiceMembers Group Life Insurance) upon retirement or separation.

So why does everyone say to stay away?

COST!!! And here’s why.

VGLI goes up every 5 years, and not just a little.

It almost doubles every time.

Check out this breakdown of how much Charlie avoided losing to VGLI’s inflating premiums.

Charlie went into the service straight out of highschool and just separated after 20 years and now he’s 40 years old.

He has a wife and 2 boys and he knows they depend on him.

He's in decent enough health but he's on blood pressure medication, something for reflux and his new jeans went up a size again.

If Charlie takes the VGLI he pays $64 per month.

Great! For 5 years! (That’s $3840 over those 5 years, let’s keep track!)

When Charlie turns 45 years old, he will pay $84 per month, not bad. ($5040 for 5 years)

Let’s keep going.

Age 50 $132/month ($7920 for 5 years)
Age 55 $240/month ($14,400 for 5 years)
Age 60 $396/month ($23,760 for 5 years)
Age 65 $588/month ($35,280 for 5 years to equal 30 years)

A lot of Veterans count on getting something else when it gets too expensive, which ends up being like paying for a car and giving it back instead of trading it in.

So how does Charlie keep from being upside down?

Instead of paying $90,240 into VGLI for 30 years, he can get a policy that stays level at $167 per month for 30 years.

CHARLIE WILL SAVE $30,000 COMPARED TO VGLI!!!

What else could Charlie do with that $3000/year?

Family vacation?

Invest in his retirement?

This day and age it may just be that $3000 that makes ends meet.

And a Veteran healthier than Charlie, will save even more!

There are even options that guarantee that if you are blessed to be alive at the end of that 30 years, you get every dollar you paid, right back.

What it comes down to is simple.

There are better ways for our Veterans and their families to protect their future than VGLI and it needs to be known that you don’t have to be an unaffected crossfit God to take advantage of them!

When my Dad died when I was a kid, the SGLI we received more than saved us. It made sure we didn’t lose my Mom to long hours and the stress of providing for two broken hearted kids alone.

That’s why I help educate and serve Veterans and their families so they can have the financial security we did, even after the SGLI is gone.
